Looking to where he nods, I freeze. Right beside the pool there's a small heap of fruit. It wasn't there a few hours ago.

“Oh,” I exclaim. “That's weird. Someone must have been here while I was asleep. You had your back to it?”

“I saw and heard nothing,” Aragadon says. “And I don't need fruit. Nor do I need a dress. Someone here is helping you while trying to trap and kill me.”

I walk up to the little pile, looking around while my skin creeps. I'm familiar with all of those types of fruit. They're all good to eat, and one of them is very special. “I really have no idea what's going on here.”

I look around quickly. Suddenly, the whole cavern feels dangerous and creepy. Beautiful as it is, I'd like to leave it as soon as possible. But I'm determined to get a bath. Whoever put this fruit here has seen me naked anyway. They may actually have been here while Aragadon and I were really busy and seen more than that. Well, that's on them. I didn't force them to peep on us.

I don't take time to soak comfortably. I just get clean and climb back out, use my hands to get as much water off me as possible, and then put my dress on.

The fruit looks and smells too good to ignore. Aragadon is right – it was probably put here by the same ones who gave me the dress. Maybe my strange feeling of always being observed while in the tunnels was right, after all. Someone might have been stalking us the whole way.

It's ordinary fruit, fresh and not tampered with in any way that I can tell. I try one, using the usual method of cutting it open with one fingernail, taste the juice, and so on. It's fine.

I can't carry all of these, so I eat my fill until only the salen fruit is left. Those are extremely hard to pick, because they only grow really high up, and the tree will defend itself against anyone trying to climb it. As far as I know, there's only one way to get one of those, and I'm not at all sure what that might tell me about this situation. But at least now I'm able to make some guesses.

I put the salen fruit into the only pocket in the dress. “Shall we go?”

Aragadon shrugs. “Go where?”

That's right. I haven't actually seen any other exit from this cavern than the way we came. “We might want to make our way back to the first cave. We have probably triggered all the traps there are along those tunnels. If the snow is still there outside, I'm not sure it matters where we leave this mountain. At least in the old cave, we know approximately where in the jungle we are.”

“I agree.” Aragadon walks towards the tunnel we came from, and I follow.

When we leave the cavern, I throw one last glance over my shoulder. It's a pretty cool place, actually.
